INSPIRE Study

Investigating Screening in Populations at High Risk to Improve Equity

Study Background

Lung cancer disproportionally affects Black women in the United States. The long-term goal of the INSPIRE study is to evaluate the feasibility and performance of low-dose computed tomography lung cancer screening among Black women.

We hope to screen 400 Black women aged 50-80 with any history of smoking for lung cancer in Boston and Chicago.

Participation

Study participants are identified at community lung cancer outreach events, supported through the screening process, and counseled about smoking cessation.

Our goal is to make lung cancer screening easy and accessible for those Black women who are eligible. After recruiting patients at outreach events, we coordinate everything from screening appointments to transportation logistics and hospital arrival. After patients undergo screening, an INSPIRE team member communicates results and smoking cessation information through a telephone phone call.
